That explains why the platter capacity has stagnated at 1TB since, well, September 2015. As it stands, the big players do not seem to have any intention of investing R&D in smaller platters to go in the drives equipped by the Backup Plus Slim. Should Seagate have swapped the LM0007 for the LMZ15, a newer, potentially faster hard drive? Maybe – but then there’s very little incentive to do so. That’s great if you have any inclination towards the creative side of computing, but not so great if you only want quality storage on the cheap (the drive comes with a two-year warranty, by the way). The drive comes with the brand new Mylio photo management software and a two-month subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, but no storage applications like, say, the WD My Passport Ultra range. It was cool to the touch during use, and barely audible. The Backup Plus Slim scored between 141 and 144MBps on reads and around 137MBps on write speeds, while a 10GB file was transferred at 128MBps. It is a slightly-better-than-average performer as shown in our CrystalDiskMark and Atto benchmarks. Surprisingly, though, that drive costs more on its own than when packaged as the Backup Plus Slim. This product uses the old ST2000LM007 drive, as we mentioned, a disk which has two 1TB platters spinning at 5,400 RPM with 128MB cache. However, if local storage is the only thing you’re looking for, I would suggest you to look elsewhere as you might get a similar capacity external hard drive at a cheaper price. Here’s how the Seagate Backup Plus Slim performed in our benchmark tests:ĬrystalDiskMark: 141MBps (read) 137MBps (write)Ītto: 144MBps (read, 256mb) 137MBps (write, 256mb) If you’re planning to keep a backup of your data on social networking sites, this drive will make your life a lot easier. To wrap this up, the software is the only differentiator. The software is really easy to use and allows to share content to social networks via the connected external hard drive, internal HDD or Seagate’s cloud service. The software supports Facebook, Flickr and YouTube social networks, which are admittedly the biggest ones but would’ve been better if Seagate added support for other social networking sites as well. This Seagate hard drive comes pre-loaded with Seagate Dashboard software and is essentially the only way to take advantage of the drive’s social networking features. Now that we’ve talked about the hardware performance, let’s talk about the software. FireWire 800 and Thunderbolt adapters can be bought separately. However, if you feel USB 3.0 is ‘slow’ for your work, you can easily swap the USB 3.0 with a better and faster FireWire 800 and Thunderbolt support. On the performance front, the drive supports USB 3.0 out of the box that gives a read/write speed of around 110MB/s and 107MB/s respectively. Seagate’s Backup Plus Desktop also needs to be powered up via an external source and comes with the requisite AC adapter. One of the major differences between is a portable and a desktop drive is the power source – a portable one can be powered by a USB port whereas you’ll need an external power source to power the desktop drive. The bottom side of the drive is detachable that supports different interfaces. The Backup Plus Desktop drive starts from 1TB storage and is available in four different SKUs up to 4TB.ĭesign-wise, the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop HDD features a glossy finish that attracts a decent amount of fingerprint smudges and vents placed on the side for dissipating heat from the drive. The portable Backup Plus drives max out at 1TB and this is where the Backup Plus Desktop drive steps in with more storage. Now we’re taking Seagate’s desktop offering for a spin that promises the same Backup Plus advantages with a humongous local storage of 3TB. We also reviewed the portable 1TB Backup Plus drive in September last year and found it a decent offering if you considered your social network data ‘save-worthy’. Seagate introduced the Backup Plus lineup last year that allowed users to backup content from and upload to their favourite social networks.

Tourists planning to trek mountain gorillas should endeavor to carry rain coats, warm clothing, garden gloves, energy snacks, good hiking boots and many other important things you might like. A maximum of only eight people is allowed to trek a given group of mountain gorillas in a day and strictly one hours of observation is given from the time the apes are found. Mountain gorilla trekking costs USD 600 in Uganda, USD 400 in Congo and USD 1500 in Rwanda. The best time for trekking the endangered mountain gorillas is during the dry season of June to September and December to February when the trekking trails are easily accessible and there are less chances of rainfall. Gorillas are the largest primates, with a huge appetite for leaves, shoots, stems. Silverback gorillas are the largest primates in the world, their hands are normally longer than the legs. What’s interesting about this bird is that the male and the female have distinct characteristics different from one another – for example, the female is much larger and heavier with distinct darker “female” plumage. In more temperate areas, this hawk will choose to be a year-round resident as they’re relatively cold resistant. The Northern Harrier is a bird of prey that breeds throughout the northern parts of Connecticut during the summer before wintering in the southernmost states. Northern Harrier image: Renee Grayson | Flickr | CC 2.0 Immature hawks are more likely to go after other food items such as amphibians, fish, and invertebrates, but tend to grow out of this by the time they reach sexual maturity. This includes mostly small rodents, with a preference for ground squirrels. This species is known as an opportunistic generalist, which simply means it will eat anything that’s available. This “chickenhawk”, another common name for it, is a year-round resident and highly adaptable to different habitats. The Red-Tailed Hawk is the most common species of hawk in North America and has breeding range throughout the continental United States. Their Fall migration usually lasts for 70 days with them traveling about 62 miles a day. Subspecies that choose to migrate like those in Connecticut fly in flocks of more than 40 on a 1,900-3,700 mile journey. This hawk especially uses thermals in order to soar through the air using the minimum amount of effort and energy. They use this to their advantage as cover when hunting, and so human deforestation and forest fragmentation of the area has had a negative impact on their population. They get their name from their especially broad but relatively short wings that allow them to quickly fly through dense undergrowth. The Broad-winged Hawk is most commonly seen in Connecticut during the summer before migrating south to winter in the neotropics. They’re all medium-sized, relatively stocky, and have broad wings designed for soaring on thermals for miles. There are technically two sub-categories of hawk – accipiters (forest hawks) and buteos (open country hawks). University Mall in nearby Blacksburg opened in 1974 and was much smaller than Crossroads. Tanglewood’s opening crippled Towers Shopping Center for a short period, since both malls were within two miles of each other and Tanglewood was clearly the larger, fancier and more-modern center. Louis’s famed Gateway Arch as its sign along Hershberger Road.Ĭrossroads developer Steele was able to parlay his success into two other malls in the greater Roanoke area: Tanglewood Mall, built in 1973, was a larger mall located 9 miles south of Crossroads in affluent southwest Roanoke County. The mall even erected a massive replica of St. Further outparcel expansion to the west in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s included Kroger and SupeRx Drugs, a small-shop building housing a Virginia ABC store, a free-standing K&W Cafeteria, and a drive-thru for Colonial American National Bank. In addition, Woolco was added to the west end of the upper level along Hershberger Road, along with a subterranean French restaurant called Fesquet’s that was very popular. JCPenney added 25,000 square feet to its store (growing to 85,000 square feet) and a free-standing auto center. A two-screen theater was added on the east side of the mall. In 1966, Crossroads Mall was expanded to coincide with opening of I-581 which came within a mile of Crossroads via Hershberger Road. Bailey’s was on the upper level and featured a open dining room that overlooked the mall’s lower level, which featured two large fountains and park-like greenery and benches. Other original mall tenants included Fink’s Jewelers, Smartwear Irving-Saks (fine apparel), Sidney’s (women’s apparel), Thom McAn, Pete’s Deli, Cato Fashions and Bailey’s Cafeteria. Original anchors at Crossroads were JCPenney, Roses variety store, Heironimus department store, Winn-Dixie and Peoples Drug. The onslaught of new suburban retail space decimated downtown Roanoke, leading it to a slow and steady period of decline that persisted for nearly 25 years, until revitalization efforts brought it back to life, though not as a major retail destination. Roanoke-Salem Plaza, an open-air center with a long pedestrian promenade opened in 1962, three miles to the west of Crossroads. Towers Shopping Center, a two-level strip mall built on a mountain in south Roanoke featured a small interior mall with escalators to connect the two levels and opened a few months after Crossroads in 1961. Crossroads was the first suburban shopping area in Roanoke that maintained night hours (until 9 PM) from Monday to Saturday.Ĭrossroads was one of three large suburban shopping centers built in the Roanoke area in 19. Throngs of shoppers left the long-dominant downtown to stroll through a grand two-story interior shopping hall reminiscent of Southdale Shopping Center in Edina, Minnesota. Most people do not like sitting in the front row of a movie theater or parking in the first rows at the drive-in, so remember that these same preferences will likely hold true for your backyard movies.Īside from making sure you have adequate square footage to create this outdoor room, you will also want to pay attention to streetlight placement, potential wind conditions and other environmental factors that may affect your movie-watching experience in your chosen space.ĭIY Backyard Movie Theater: Selecting Your Movie ScreenĬhoosing what you are going to use for your screen is where you can really save some money on your setup or choose to go for a higher-end option and hit the top of your budget. Keep in mind that you will likely want a bit of space between your seating and the screen. Typically, you will need at least enough space for a small table to accommodate your equipment. You will need to consider the size of the screen you wish to use, the number of movie watchers and the space your particular A/V equipment will require. If you want a more permanent setup that can be enjoyed at a moment’s notice, you will need to find a dedicated space that allows room for your screen, seating and audio-visual equipment. Your existing patio or lawn may suit your needs, and you will just need to move some patio furniture to accommodate guests or find a spot to hang your screen temporarily. If you will just be bringing out your equipment for occasional movie nights, then you will not necessarily need to make any permanent changes to your backyard. The first thing you need to decide before choosing a space for your theater is whether your setup will be permanent or temporary. So let’s get right into gathering your gear, expanding your usable outdoor living space and getting your at-home movie theater set up for your next date night, family movie night or social gathering. This DIY project can range from simply hanging a white bed sheet on your clothesline to installing a high-end, retractable projector screen on your patio, which means almost any homeowner with a yard or some sort can get in on some alfresco movie-watching action. There are a lot of options when it comes to setting up a backyard cinema, including portable options that can be used for both indoor and outdoor home theaters, inexpensive options that can be put together in a day using mostly items you already have, and luxury, permanent installations that could even increase the value of your home. You probably have at least some of the necessities for this do-it-yourself project already on hand, which will make it even more affordable. Of course, expensive, luxury options are available that require bringing in professionals to set up high-end A/V equipment and a huge, permanent movie screen, but DIY options are available that should fit into any homeowner’s budget. In fact, DIY theaters are so easy to set up, it is a bit surprising that we do not see more of these outdoor room options in San Diego homes. It might seem like you need some extensive tech skills, expensive audio-visual gear and a pricey movie screen to set up an enjoyable movie-watching experience at home, but creating your own theater is actually easier and cheaper than most people think. Here in San Diego, where we enjoy some pretty great weather throughout the year, we have another option that can be a lot more fun: backyard movie theaters. The last step is of course to decide what movie to watch, but luckily it's hard to go wrong with a summer blockbuster, Hollywood classic, or anything in between.Heading to your local movie theater or making the short jaunt to one of the drive-in theaters in the San Diego area is not your only option for enjoying your favorite flicks on the big screen. Whichever route you choose, you’ll be building something that’s sure to be a highlight of the season. If you plan to host multiple movie nights over the summer, it may be worth trying out something more elaborate that requires more planning and elbow grease to execute. For a one-time movie night, you may want to opt for a simple structure that uses materials you likely already have. To get started with your DIY theater project, you’ll first want to determine how much time and energy you want to devote. On top of being a budget-friendly experience, creating your own outdoor setup is also an intimate and memorable activity for the whole family. Those who live near a drive-in theater can always catch a showing there, but for anyone who doesn’t, crafting a DIY outdoor movie screen is the next best thing. You’ve hosted cookouts and played games with the family outside, but an outdoor activity you may not have tried yet is watching one of your favorite movies in your backyard. Moreover, people that have tried using it on large projects consisting of thick metals or for long periods of time, came across problems with power or heat shortages. The Chicago electric flux welder is great for small short-term DIY projects at home and minor repairs. It works quite well for most projects, but if you are into a deep weld, it is recommended to buy a different tip to attach to, in order to avoid any issues. The sort of tip that comes with this Chicago flux welder can sometimes make it difficult to see over when doing certain welding jobs. It is also good for some light welding on mild, low alloy steel. This specific flux welder is a great device to start with if you are not experienced enough or are just beginning to learn the basics, especially if you want one that is affordable. Keep in mind that It only comes with a spool of wire when purchased, you need to buy additional wire separately.Ĭhicago Electric is considered one of the cheaper brands to buy from for air compressors, cordless power tools, welders, power inverters, including this one, and so on.
